Actress Monaghan’s Midwestern roots keep her  grounded
In the new thriller “Source Code,” Michelle Monaghan plays a Chicago woman described by the Jake Gyllenhaal character as “beautiful,” “decent” and “honest.” Beauty comes cheap in the movies. Hollywood boasts an eternally full quota of attractive nuisances, the nuisance part (separate from the beauty part) being the expressive limitations of those who achieve stardom without really having much star quality. 

The ability to convey decency and honesty in a lively way on-screen, however, is rarer, and more interesting. This brings us to Monaghan, who at 35 may be a more familiar face than a name, but whose well-regarded career has avoided the rut of typecasting.

This is just how she wants it. “It’s important to keep Hollywood guessing,” she says over coffee at a downtown restaurant. “I’ve done one or two romantic comedies” — her resume includes “Made of Honor” and “The Heartbreak Kid” remake — “but if that was all I did, it’d be the end of my career. I want to be around a long time. I love my job.”

Michelle Monaghan knows her action movies. Unlike many of her contemporaries, the actress kicked off her Hollywood career rather quickly in high profile movies like “The Bourne Supremacy,” “Mission: Impossible III,” “Eagle Eye” and more.

Now, she co-stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the mind-bending thriller “Source Code,” and once again she’s front and center in the action. Known for her roles in “Mission Impossible III,” “The Heartbreak Kid” and “Eagle Eye,” actress Michelle Monaghan’s latest film, “Source Code,” comes out on April 1st.

“It’s a tricky movie to describe,” she admits, calling it: “‘Groundhog Day’ meets ‘Inception.’” Though it’s based in sci-fi, Monaghan says it’s essentially a love story.

“But it’s really fast-paced!”

Along with dreamy Jake Gyllenhaal, Canadian comedian Russell Peters is also featured in the movie. “He’s fantastic!” Monaghan gushes. “I love him! He’s so, so funny.”

Monaghan has worked with many other leading men in Hollywood including Patrick Dempsey. “He’s really a lovely guy. He’s funny and he’s charming,” Monaghan gushes.

She was incredibly impressed on the set of “Mission Impossible” by Tom Cruise’s strong work ethic. “He’s probably the most generous person I’ve ever met in my life,” she says.

And in the movie “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” that launched Monaghan’s film career, Robert Downey Jr. offered her incredible support.

“He taught me how to improvise,” she says. “He was so encouraging to me.

“He really believed in me and gave me a lot of support and encouragement.”
