After not coming out with a film in 2010, apparently Judi Dench is making up for lost time. Set to come out with four movies this year (Jane Eyre, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, My Week With Marilyn and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Dench has been taking a lot of meetings recently and has confirmed involvement in the next James Bond film, in which she will return as M, and the Clint Eastwood J. Edgar Hoover bio-pic. But she’s not done yet.

Variety reports that the Oscar winner, as well as Michelle Monaghan, is joining the cast of Better Living Through Chemistry. The film is set to be written and directed by David Posamentier and Geoff Moore and already has Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Garner attached to star. Renner will play a small town pharmacist who gets caught up in a wild, prescription drug-fueled affair with a trophy wife (Garner). Wanting to be together, the two then hatch a plan to kill her husband. The roles to be played by Dench and Monaghan are unspecified.

I’ve always wanted to see a proper adaptation of James M. Cain’s The Postman Always Rings Twice, but neither versions – including the 1946 film with John Garfield and Lana Turner and the 1981 film with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange – have ever been willing to go far enough to capture the story’s more graphic content. While this project is based on an original script, it sounds like it has a lot in common with Cain’s story, so I can only hope that they will be willing to push the envelope.

Actress Monaghan’s Midwestern roots keep her  grounded
In the new thriller “Source Code,” Michelle Monaghan plays a Chicago woman described by the Jake Gyllenhaal character as “beautiful,” “decent” and “honest.” Beauty comes cheap in the movies. Hollywood boasts an eternally full quota of attractive nuisances, the nuisance part (separate from the beauty part) being the expressive limitations of those who achieve stardom without really having much star quality. 

The ability to convey decency and honesty in a lively way on-screen, however, is rarer, and more interesting. This brings us to Monaghan, who at 35 may be a more familiar face than a name, but whose well-regarded career has avoided the rut of typecasting.

This is just how she wants it. “It’s important to keep Hollywood guessing,” she says over coffee at a downtown restaurant. “I’ve done one or two romantic comedies” — her resume includes “Made of Honor” and “The Heartbreak Kid” remake — “but if that was all I did, it’d be the end of my career. I want to be around a long time. I love my job.”

At the risk of sounding rather shallow, my favorite part of this year’s Saturn Awards was my brief conversation with actress Michelle Monaghan, a woman with eyes that could level mountains and a smile that could generate a tsunami. She’s also a talented actress who’s contributed memorable roles to genre fare like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Mission Impossible 3. Her next role is in Source Code, director Duncan Jones’ much-anticipated follow-up to his indie hit Moon. Read my little chat with Monaghan, to find out what she said about her role in Source Code, after the jump.

You have an upcoming thriller that I think our audience is very excited about. Can you talk about it briefly?

Yes, I’ve got a film that’s coming up that’s called Source Code with Duncan Jones directing. Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright – incredible sort of sci-fi. It’s a really incredible ride, and you kind of really don’t know which direction it’s taking you.

How would you describe your character?

She’s kind of a girl that’s a little bit lost, and she hasn’t really found her path in life, and she’s a little bit confused. She meets a random guy on the train, and he kind of helps her sort out her life and her future. He’s very enlightening to her.

And you have another upcoming film as well…

Due Date with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galafianakis.

That’s gotta be a really dull shoot.

So boring, the two of them. It’s like watching paint dry. [Laughs.]

Casting for actors is currently taking place in Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, and Johannesburg, South Africa for the Lionsgate feature film Machine Gun Preacher. The film is based on a true story. Gerard Butler has signed on to play the reformed bad guy Sam Childers, a drug-dealing biker who found God and became the scourge of rebel forces who kidnap children in Sudan and Northern Uganda.

Michelle Monaghan has signed on to play Childers’ wife, Lynn, who cleaned up her own demons while Childers did a stretch behind bars, and struggled to keep their family together in Detroit while he went to Africa to establish an orphanage to house 300 children.

Marc Forster will direct the film and his company, Apparatus Productions, will co-produce with Lionsgate. Forster has directed such films as Monster’s Ball, Finding Neverland, and Quantum of Solace. He is repped by Todd Feldman at Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
